About the South Asian Canadian Legacy Project:

  • There are large gaps in South Asian Canadian history due to emission or neglect.
  • Mayo Singh and 35 shareholders bought land in Paldi on Vancouver Island and established Mayo Siding, a very successful mill that provided jobs to many South Asian Canadians.
  • The Cowichan Valley Museum and Archives had all of Joan Mayo’s research material.
  • The South Asian Legacy project is digitizing and displaying all of Joan Mayo’s findings.
  • Joan Mayo married the oldest son of Mayo-Singh in 1951.
  • There has been only a provincial and federal Canadian view about keeping people separate, so sitting down and talking about it may be a better approach.
  • The South Asian Canadian Legacy Project is now online and accessible worldwide
  • Through colonization, the priority of history in Canada has mainly been about European-centric history.
  • The legacy projects largest portion of photos and videos came from Paldi.
  • The status quo in our communities is very supremacist and is at its core a place of privilege and power that is unquestioned.
